ABOUT JOURNEY GAP YEAR – OUR STORY
For over a century, this land has been teaching us how to live, farm, and care for what truly matters.
Rising Ground Farm represents five generations of farming history in the Eastern Cape. Originally purchased in 1905 and named Lowestoffe—an old English term meaning “Rising Ground”—the farm has grown into a collection of interconnected enterprises, including livestock farming, hospitality, and conservation.
Since opening our doors to guests in 1994, we’ve had the privilege of sharing this way of life with people seeking something more grounded, connected, and meaningful.
In 1997, our approach to farming shifted after being introduced to Holistic Management through the work of Allan Savory. This marked a turning point. We began to see ourselves not simply as livestock farmers, but as stewards of soil, grass, and the entire ecosystem.
Today, our cattle and sheep are managed in large, integrated herds, working in harmony with nature to restore the health of the land. Across 5,500 hectares of diverse landscape, regenerative principles guide how we farm, think, and live.
Over the years, our passion for people has remained just as strong as our commitment to the land—giving rise to Guest Lodges, Community, Nature Reserve and the Gap Year.
